Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
For the Frosting:
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons heavy cream
- Black food colouring (optional for web design)
- Dark chocolate (melted, for web and spiders)
Steps:
- Get the oven ready: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Use Oil as well as flour in two 8-inch round cake pans.
- Make the Cake Batter: Mix butter and sugar in a large bowl until frothy. After adding each egg, beat well. Stir in vanilla. Mix baking powder, flour and salt in a different bowl. Add dry ingredients to the wet mixture slowly, alternating with milk, until mixed.
- Bake cakes: Distribute batter across the two pans. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean, 25-30 minutes. Let them cool in pans for at least 10 minutes before shifting to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Frosting recipe: Make buttercream icing while the cakes cool. In a large basin, beat softened butter smooth. Add powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract gradually and whisk until frothy. For a Halloween-themed foundation, add black food colouring to the icing.
- Frost the Cake: Once the cakes are fully cooled, spread a layer of frosting between the two cake layers, then cover the top and sides with an even layer of frosting.
- Create the Spiderweb: Melt dark chocolate in the microwave or over a double boiler. Transfer the melted chocolate to a piping bag or a plastic zip-top bag with the tip snipped off. Pipe a large spiral starting from the centre of the cake, then use a toothpick or knife to drag lines from the centre outward to create the spiderweb effect.
- Add Spiders: Use the remaining melted chocolate to pipe small spider bodies.
- Chill and Serve: Let the cake chill in the fridge for 20-30 minutes before serving to allow the frosting and decorations to set. This will help the spider web design hold its shape.
